As many of us bid farewell to the University of Arizona and move on to the next chapter of our adventure, we have the opportunity to commemorate our experiences and hard work with keepsake graduation photos.
Hire a photographer or grab a friend. UA sophomore and photographer Samantha Lim recommends using a disposable film camera for that vintage aesthetic, for grads who want a more casual, fun shoot.
IPhones can also snap a great shot. “You can do so much with an iPhone, using portrait mode is often a fun way to get something called bokeh, […] [it’s] basically the separation of your subject and the background,” UA senior and photographer Mackenzie Haensgen said.
According to Haensgen, the rule of thirds is another key component to capturing the perfect photo. Imagine the image being split by two vertical lines into three sections. Then, place the subject of the photo along either the left or right line, leaving the rest open to display the landscape.
When it comes to the location of your shoot, it’s totally dependent on the places that were meaningful to you during your time here. Of course, there are the classics you can’t miss.
Old Main is the go-to for many grads. As the oldest building and the heart of the University of Arizona, a photo here captures the history and culture of the school while providing a great architectural background.
Just east of Old Main is the Arizona State Museum, which has one of the most beautiful stretches of greenery on campus. “If you bring a pair of sunnies and some flowers, it makes for the perfect Pinterest-esque grad pics,” Lim said.
Some other charming locations include the rose bushes by the Forbes Building, the tree-lined trail beside the Maricopa and Gila dorms and the palm walk near University Boulevard.
“Look out for greenery, florals and interesting architecture. Having beautiful surroundings makes for pictures that are just that much more stunning,” Lim said.
Another important part of graduation photos to consider is your outfit. The classic white dress or suit, along with your cap, gown, and stoles, is a must — but don’t be afraid to mix it up.
A few shots in your casual Arizona gear with some friends can add a fun twist to your album.
Don’t forget to have fun! Graduation is a time of celebration, so strike those fun poses, pop that champagne and remember that these photos are meant to capture some of the best years of your life.
